NEPALI MOVIES TO WATCH DURING LOCKDOWN - PART 2

Over the years, the Nepali movie industry has been providing us great movies. It certainly needs to reach out to more people and it deserves much attention.

11. Utsav

Starring: Saugat Malla, Gaurav Pahari, Menuka Pradhan, Prakriti Shrestha, Sanjog Koirala

Utsav is a combination of comedy, tears, and love. The story revolves around 5 college friends each one having a different story in their lives. It takes you through all the elements you can find in a friendship. The movie release clashed with Shree Krishna Shrestha's last movie Kohinoor. Therefore, it did not get much attention. However, the movie is simple yet fun and full of emotions.

10. Loafer

Released in: 2013

Cast: Dayahang Rai, Aryan Sigdel, Kamal Mani Nepal, Sushil Raj Pandey, Rajani Kc, Kamal Krishna

Loafer is a thriller plus action movie revolving around a few unemployed guys. Story complexes as they get involved in kidnapping under the influence of one of their friends. The movie has a lot of twists and will make you go round and round. Even though the action sequence of the movie is a little unrealistic the storyline is mind-blowing.

9. Mukhauta

Released in: 2014

Cast: Rajesh Hamal, Saugat Malla, Robin Tamang, Sunil Thapa, Arpan Thapa, Dayahang Rai, Nisha Adhikari, Narshika Shrestha, Prashant Tamrakar

The movie is based on the time when hippie culture flourished in Nepal with the rise in the usage of marijuana and other drugs. Two mafia leaders, Damodar and Cheppang have to protect their selling areas from each other. Besides the main storyline, the movie takes you deep down to each character's sufferings, problems, and realizations. Arpan Thapa, the great as I would call has bought brilliance out in each actor's performance.

8. Kabaddi/ Kabaddi Kabaddi

Cast: Daya Hang Rai, Nischal Bassnet, Rishma Gurung, Rajan Khatiwoda, Buddhi Tamang, Bijay Baral, Kamal Mani Nepal, Saugat Malla

Kabbadi is a story of a man's journey to win the heart of his cousin who he loves but the girl doesn't love him back. Issues are created when she falls in love with another man from the city. The movie takes you through the pain in the man's one-sided love. The movie has two more sequels. Kabbadi Kabbadi has the beauty with higher comic intensity while Kabbadi Kabbadi has not reached that expectation.

7. Prasad

Released in: 2018

Director: Dinesh Raut

Cast: Bipin Karki, Barsha Shrestha, Nischal Basnet, Bashundhara Bhusal

Prasad is a story about a newly married couple and their struggle. They find out that they can't conceive a baby. The movie shows how so-called low castes are intimidated in our society. Both Namrata Shrestha and  Bipin Karki have given their best and will make you feel that the story is close around you.

6. Manjari

Released in: 2013
Director: Ganesh Dev Pandey
Cast: Gaurav Pahari, Sujata Koirala, Tika Pahari, Bishnu Rimal

Manjari is a romantic and painful story of two young intercaste lovers who decide to run away as the girl's father would not allow her to marry a guy of a lower caste. The movie is an adaptation of a Tamil movie, Kadhal. The movie will leave you in tears. Gaurav Pahari and Sujata Koirala both have shown their incredible performance. The song from this movie 'Daiba Hey' had become very popular.

5. Aama

Released in: 2020

Director: Dipendra K. Khanal

Cast: Surakhshya Panta, Mithila  Sharma, Sarita Giri, Tika Pahari

Aama is a woman-centric movie that made its name through a strong storyline as well as Surakhsya Panta's brilliant performance. The movie revolves around the harsh life of a woman who has to take care of her parents. It shows the mother-daughter relationship on a deeper level. Surakhsya Panta even had gone bald for the role in the movie.

4. Jhola

Released in: 2013
Director: Yadav Kumar Bhattarai
Cast: Garima Panta, Sujal Nepal, Deepak Chettri

Jhola is based on a story by Krishna Dharabasi. The movie is a period movie during the time when Sati pratha was practiced in Nepal. The movie will take you through the evil societal thoughts and the pain of a Sati. No doubt, you will have goosebumps all over your body and tears all over your eyes. This is a must-watch Nepali film.

3. Pashupati Prasad

Released in: 2016

Director: Dipendra K. Khanal

Cast: Khagendra Lamichhane, Barsha Siwakoti, Bipin Karki, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Prakash Ghimire

Pashupati Prasad is a movie about a man who has inherited his debt of his parents who had died during the earthquake. Determined to pay back the debt he comes to the city to find work and goes through different obstacles. The movie was liked and appreciated a lot.

2. Soongava: Dance of the Orchids

Released in: 2012
Directed by: Subarna Thapa
Cast: Deeya Makey, Nisha Adhikari, Saugat Malla, Subarna Thapa, Laxmi Giri

Soongava is the first Nepali Lesbian movie. Two traditional dancers fall in love with each other. One of them is about to get married. As the story progresses, they get exposed to their own inner feelings and end up living their relationship openly. But societal restrictions bring storm in their lives.

1. Chadke

Released in: 2013
Director: Nigam Shrestha
Cast: Saugat Malla, Bipin Karki, Dayahang Rai, Robin Tamang, Namrata Shrestha, Nikun Shrestha

The movie shows different interrelated stories. One being that of three childhood friends whose destinies are in different directions. The second one is about Rhino horn smuggling gangs. The other one is about a researcher. The story twists and complicates when these three stories are touched by politics, love, and rage. Bipin Karki has pulled off an amazing performance as a local goon 'Bindu'.
